ABSTRACT Evaluation of mobilized soil profiles can provide important information on soil compaction reduction processes. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate alterations in soil penetration resistance and the impact on the aggregate stability of a cohesive Ultisol cultivated with sugarcane. The experiment was carried out at the Carpina Sugarcane Experimental Station (EECAC/UFRPE), located in the city of Carpina, PE. Penetration resistance, mobilized area and depth, and percentage of soil aggregates were evaluated before and after soil tillage. RESUMO - Os níveis de resistência à penetração do solo e a qualidade da estrutura na camada superficial foram avaliados na Unidade de Referência em sistema ILPF e no cerrado adjacente, na Fazenda Experimental da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, em Sete Lagoas-MG. O trabalho foi realizado utilizando-se um penetrógrafo eletrônico para avaliar a resistência do solo à penetração até 60 cm de profundidade e o DRES - Diagnóstico Rápido da Estrutura do Solo para a camada de 0 a 20 cm de profundidade. Não houve diferença estatística entre a resistência à penetração no cerrado e no sistema ILPF. ABSTRACT Measurements of the soil cone index are widely used to assess soil resistance to root penetration (SR) and to monitor the soil compaction status of agricultural fields. However, soil sampling for SR estimation is a rather challenging task in view of the high spatial and temporal variability of the soil. This study proposed a bootstrapping method to determine the minimum sample size required to estimate the vertical profile of mean soil cone index (CI) values at different levels of precision and confidence. Abstract Soil compaction is a complex physical process that affects the crop performance by limiting the expansion of the roots and the reduction of water and nutrients uptake from soil. Due to the spatial variability of soil compaction, the needs for remedial practices may vary within the field. However, mapping soil compaction estimated by cone index (CI) data is a difficult task. Mechanical impedance of clayey and gravelly soils is often needed to interpret experimental results from tillage and other field experiments. Its measurement is difficult with manual and hydraulic penetrometers, which often bend or break in such soils. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a hand-operated "Stolf" impact penetrometer to measure mechanical impedance (soil resistance). The research was conducted in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA (35º 45'N, 78º 42'W, elevation 75 m). Corn was planted on April 19, 1991.
